Puritans Migrate
To escape religious persecution and economic ruin, some 60,000 Puritans left England for the Americas. Most went to the West Indies, but some 10,000 to 20,000 Puritans settled in Massachusetts. There they established a commonwealth based on cooperation between church and state.
