Gettysburg—considered
by many to be the greatest single Civil War
battle—was fought on July 1–3, 1863. On
July 3, some 15,000 Confederate soldiers, led
by Major General George Pickett, attacked the
Union position on Cemetery Ridge. Known as
“Pickett’s Charge,” this clash marked the end
of the Battle of Gettysburg. Union casualties
were about 23,000 and Confederates
numbered more than 20,000. |
