Development of Cuneiform, 3000 B.C.-600 B.C.
The ancient system of writing known as cuneiform (from Latin for wedge) was probably invented by the Sumerians. Pictographs are as old as 3000 B.C. Around 2800 B.C. the pictographs were rotated as the direction of writing was changed from vertical to horizontal. The pictographs changed over time to more representational symbols. These symbols were created by a stylus with a triangular point which gave the characteristic wedge shape to the line strokes. The characters were usually pressed into wet clay tablets that were then dried in the sun or baked.
