Lesson 5.4 The Pythagorean Theorem

Pythagorean Theorem
The Pythagorean Theorem is probably one of the most proven theorems in mathematics. In this activity, you will investigate the proof that is attributed to Euclid. Then you will investigate proofs that use modern technology and transformations. You will also learn more about Pythagoras.

Exploration
Pythagoras
This biographical site gives a wealth of information about Pythagoras and his Greek society. There are several pictures of Pythagoras, including sculptures, paintings, and even coins. This site illustrates why Pythagoras was an important mathematician.

The Pythagorean Theorem
This site gives many proofs, including the one used by Euclid.

Pythagorean Theorem
This is another collection of proofs, including a Java applet that uses rotations and “sheers” in the proof. This animated proof is an illustration of how mathematicians are using dynamic geometry to come up with new proofs of ancient theorems.

Animated Proof of the Pythagorean Theorem
Another animated proof is presented at this site.
