One use for direct variation in our daily lives is converting from one unit of measurement to another. Such tasks as converting from pints to gallons, inches to yards, teaspoons to cups, or hours to days require us to know specific conversion factors. All of these take the form of the direct-variation equation: y = kx, where k is the constant of variation or, in this activity, the conversion factor. |
