Doubling |
Imagine that you begin with one penny, and each day you double the amount of money that you had on the previous day. So, on day 1, you have $0.01; on day 2, you have $0.02; on day 3, you have $0.04; and so on. How much money do you think you will have in 30 days? Believe it or not, a collection of pennies that is doubled every day becomes quite valuable very quickly - after 30 days, it is worth over 5 million dollars! The websites listed below can help you to see how this incredibly rapid growth occurs. |

Exponential Growth This site includes discussion of paper-folding, placing grains of rice on a chessboard, and making noodles! These situations all involve a quantity which is repeatedly doubled. (Note: The author of this site used the symbol ** to denote exponents. So, 2**5 really means 2^5, or 2 to the 5th power.) http://www.intsoft.com/powers2.html |
