Use the denominator of the first factor to determine the number of
rows. Click the arrow above "Choose the number of rows per grid,"
to select the number of rows.
Use the denominator of the second factor to determine the number of
columns.
Drag the purple arrow down to model the first factor.
Drag the orange arrow to the right to model the second factor.
The overlapping region, shown in pink, models the product. The numerator
of the product is the number of pink sections on the grid. The denominator of
the product is the total number of sections.
For example, to model
:
Choose 5 rows, since the denominator of the first factor is 5.
Choose 3 columns, since the denominator of the second factor is 3.
Drag the purple arrow down to fill 4 of the 5 rows purple.
Drag the orange arrow to the right to fill 2 of the 3 columns.
