Renaming Fractions

To rename a fraction or mixed number, first use Select Bars to choose the fraction to rename. Then drag fraction bars on top of the highlighted fraction until the original fraction is covered exactly.

NOTE: Only one type of fraction bar can be used when renaming. It is not possible to rename bars in several rows.

For example, to rename

as an improper fraction using thirds:

by placing a unit bar and two

bars in the top row.

Click Select Bars

Drag until the red bounding box encloses the bars to rename. Then release the mouse button. The selected bars have a yellow border.

Drag a

bar on top of the selection.

Continue dragging

s bars to cover the original.

When the fourth bar is placed, the original fraction is covered exactly. A "Well done" message appears.

This shows that

If the last bar goes beyond the end of the original fraction, the fraction type used cannot rename the original fraction. An error message appears, and the renaming bars are deleted.

When bars are selected, the Select Bars button changes to Deselect Bars. Click this button to deselect the bars.
