Visit The Politics to learn about the fear-based policies that stripped many Americans of their basic rights. Then, visit Memories to sample firsthand accounts from people who survived this great injustice.
Choices 5: Kimonos and Tea Sets
Smooth silk sleeves, ornate belts, and fine embroidery don’t even begin to describe Japanese kimonos. Scrutinize kimonos from different eras of history, and learn how these elegant robes can identify a person’s occupation, marital status, or the season of the year. But be careful—you should never judge a person by his or her clothing alone.

Travel into the heart of the Japanese American internment camps with this multimedia exhibit from the Japanese American National Museum. Let home movies, letters, and firsthand interviews from the Americans imprisoned in the camps give you a close-up view of life behind barbed wire. Once you’ve seen the hardships the internees endured, you’ll appreciate the small victories for which they fought.
American War Heroes
While their families were locked in internment camps, many young Japanese American men volunteered to fight for the United States. They came back as some of the most-decorated troops in the Second World War. Travel to the European front with the soldiers of the 100th Battalion/ 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and learn how their bravery won them the nickname “The Purple Heart Battalion.”
