On June 22, 1941, the Germans launched Operation Barbarossa, a three-pronged attack on the Soviet Union, heading for Leningrad, Moscow, and the industrial Donets Basin. The German offensive contained the largest force in European history: 153 divisions of almost 3.6 million Axis soldiers, with around 3,600 tanks and over 2,700 aircraft. The Germans reached the outskirts of Moscow by December 1941 but were unable to take the city. Leningrad also never surrendered. |
