Union Soldiers’ Occupations
This pie chart shows the main occupations of Union soldiers before the war. Complete records for prewar occupations of Confederate soldiers are not available. However, we do know that about two thirds of Confederate soldiers and almost half of Union soldiers were farmers before the war. In addition, some 1,100 West Point graduates fought in the war. Of these, 75 percent fought for the Union, and 25 percent for the Confederacy.
