 Historical Research Paper

A historical research paper gives readers factual information about events that happened in the past and helps them gain a better understanding of the events of today.

Many historical research papers use the structure illustrated in the framework below. Print this framework and use it as a guide when you write your own historical research paper.

    Introduction
• Draw readers into your research with an interesting opener.
• Give an overview of your research.
• Include your thesis statement.
Grab your readers' attention Begin your paper with an attention-getting title, as well as an opening paragraph that includes an interesting detail or quotation or a vivid scene.
Introduce readers to your topic Provide background information, any necessary explanation of your research question, and the answers you found.
State your thesis Be sure to include a thesis statement in your introduction. Remember that the introduction may require more than one paragraph if the topic is complicated.

    Body
• Develop the first idea that supports your thesis.
• Develop the second idea that supports your thesis, and so on.
Develop each main idea Use factual information you found in the course of your research. Cite sources according to your teacher's instructions, and include sources on your Works Cited list.
Arrange ideas sensibly Use chronological order, logical order, or order of importance to organize your ideas.
Use transitional words and phrases Connect your ideas smoothly within and between paragraphs.

    Conclusion
• Restate your thesis.
• Provide a final assessment of your ideas.
End your paper effectively Reword your thesis and remind readers of the purpose of your paper. Draw final conclusions about the topic of your research. End with a memorable "clincher" sentence.
